Detachment 597 Marine Corps Ball – location to be determined

Commandant's Desk

Greetings to our Marines, Sailors and members across our Detachment. This year is turning out to be a year of positive change, and momentum forward. Your elected Board of Officers has been, and will continue to move forward towards reaching our three main goals: RECRUIT & RETAIN; FUNDRAISING; and TRAINING! With the successful attendance at the Department meeting, and the first of its kind Board Retreat, we are working hard to bring bigger and better activities to your Detachment. Unfortunately during this past month we had to say “farewell” to one of our most ardent supporters – Michael Hays, Junior Vice Commandant. Michael and his lovely bride, Christine Hays, will be missed but not forgotten. Michael has taken a new position with the Arizona Department of Corrections. Good luck, and please know that your service, dedication and commitment to the success of our Detachment will not be forgotten. Get ready for exciting programs, events and activities in Detachment 597 as we move forward into the year. Remain committed, get involved and Semper Fidelis!

Sr. Vice Parade Deck

Fellow Marines and Friends!
I confess that I don't know each and every one of you by name. I plan on correcting that during my term as Senior Vice. It's easy to come to a meeting and sit with the same people each month. These are the people we are "comfortable" with. Maybe they are our age, or served during "Our War" or Cold War Era. Have you noticed how the face of a guest "lights up" when you ask him about his MOS in the Corps, or his experiences? You will when you take 5 minuets during the break and after the meeting to show your interest in knowing this Marine or Corpsman.  I've brought guests to a meeting and tried to make them feel that this could be a meaningful experience. My mistake was not taking them around to ALL of our members! Had I done this they would have "connected" with several members and been looking forward to the next meeting. A follow up phone call couldn't hurt either. When you see a new face, come up and say Hello! If there are two people talking to him, jump in and shake his hand and sit down. Make a point of saying welcome before the night is over. Say you hope to see him or her next month. Keep in mind that many of these veterans didn't receive the respect they so justly learned and have had little or no contact with their roots following separation from active duty. We value them and need them to make our League strong! One day you may find them at your doorstep when you need a hand!
YOUR LEAGUE!  YOUR FRIENDS!  YOUR BROTHERS!

Adjutant's Report

March began with a two-day Board Retreat to develop plans and activities for this year. Just to highlight a few of the items that are now underway:

  • Emphasis on recruitment and retention, which are top priority for your Board.
  • Fund raising events.
  • A Welcome Aboard package is being developed to orient our new members.
  • A Detachment Handbook for all our members is in the formative stages. This handbook will include such things as “contact lists”, chain of command, committees and their chairmen, calendar of major events, our league and detachment history, member benefits.
  • Organizing the Birthday Ball.
  • The Board is conducting a review of the membership roster to be sure all members have properly received their League medals and ribbons.
  • Develop a Detachment website.

I would like to encourage our members to attend the Department Convention 3-6 June 2004 at the Sheraton Hotel in Concord, CA. This will give you the opportunity to find out what is happening with other detachments across the state as well as the direction of our Department. The other major convention is the League National Convention 31 July – 9 August 2004 in Irving, TX.

Mark your calendars now for the Birthday Ball on Saturday, November 6. Join your fellow Marines to celebrate the birthday of our Corps. Remember to invite other Marines to join us for the festivities. The Ball will also include our annual awards ceremony.

Lastly, your board is working hard to have exciting activities and programs for you to enjoy, but we can’t do everything. Therefore we will be coming to many of you to join various committees. We hope your response is a hearty “Aye Aye”. If you have a special skill or desire to be apart of a specific committee, please see one of your officers. Your officers are to provide leadership and direction for our detachment, but more importantly, they are here to serve the membership.

Mission Statement

Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps. This is accomplished by banding together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service; voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines and former Marines and to their widows and orphans, and by perpetuating the history of the United States Marine Corps through fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular interest to Marines.

Parade Jest

In tribute to our dedicated Marines giving their lives and serving our country and in respect to their families we will not have Parade Jest this month. Please take a moment instead to offer a prayer for the all-active military personnel serving our country everywhere. And say a special prayer for the families and friends who have lost loved ones in the past few weeks.

Make sure you support our sponsors with every opportunity you get!
